There are many steps involved when it comes to optimizing your site for the good search engine performance. The search engine algorithms are always changing and because of that we will always have some type of work to do to make our site better.

Working on our seo is something that most people do on a daily basis by adding keywords to their publications, adding keywords to images, and improving the content. One thing that may be pushed to the wayside for those with older sites is the updating and refreshening of old posts. But this is one thing that should be moved up on your to-do list.

Old posts can become a great tool in your search engine optimization toolbox. The search engines love old posts for many reasons.

1) They offer substance to your site.

2) They are proof that you have been in business for a length of time.

3) They are great for backlinks and searches.

But often we get sidetracked with the latest methods of updating our sites. The thing, your older posts can be a gold mine if they are updated and refreshed.

So what needs to be refreshed in a post?

  • Take a look at your archives and go through each page looking for proper keywords and placement.
  • Check your titles. Make sure your keyword is there plus in your copy.
  • Update your images with keywords and descriptions.
  • Add some new content to the page.
  • Tie in other articles or pages through interlinking.
  • Add some <h1>, <h2> and <h3> codes, breaking up your content a bit for easier reading.

Some people are afraid to change a post that has been published for a while thinking that it will harm their ranking. The truth about that is the Search Engines love updated content. As the spiders crawl your site they are looking for what has changed on your site. When it sees updates, then they will crawl the old content looking for more changes. That is a good thing! You want that old content seen and coming up in searches again.

Continually working and refreshing your site is going to help your rankings in the SE. The more content that is being updated and added, the more often the spiders will crawl your site which can improve your traffic over time.
